On a summer evening in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 16-year-old Nylah Linear was tragically cut short. On July 21, 2021, the female teenager was with her two younger sisters, walking to a family cookout at their aunt's house in the Shawnee neighborhood. As they were outside the home on Cecil Avenue, a drive-by shooting occurred, and Nylah was struck by a stray bullet. Her mother, Candy Linear, who was at her own home nearby, heard the gunshots and soon received a devastating phone call.
She rushed to the scene to find her daughter lying on the ground. Nylah was an innocent bystander in a senseless act of violence. A 15-year-old boy was also injured in the shooting.
Nylah was a rising junior at PRP High School who was known for her ability to bring peace to her family and make them smile. Described as a hard worker, she had been employed since she was 14 years old to afford her love for designer things. Her sudden death left her family and community devastated. In the wake of this tragedy, another 16-year-old girl was killed in a separate shooting on the same block just hours later, compounding the neighborhood's grief and fear.
As of July 2024, three years after her death, no arrests have been made in connection with Nylah Linear's murder. Her case is one of over 400 unsolved homicides in Louisville in the last five years. The investigation into her death has faced challenges; her mother revealed that the original detective on the case retired without her knowledge, and there was a period where the case was inactive before a new detective was assigned. In her daughter's memory, Candy Linear established the Nylah Linear Foundation to provide support to other families who have lost children to gun violence. She continues to be a vocal advocate for justice for her daughter and the many other victims of unsolved violent crimes in the city, organizing events to keep their memories alive and push for answers.
