On the evening of November 30, 2016, a burst of gunfire erupted in front of the Stop One convenience store in the Liberty Heights area of Baltimore, Maryland, forever altering the lives of several families. In the aftermath of the violence, 23-year-old Davon Dozier, a male, lay dead at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Another man, 29-year-old Troy Smothers, was critically injured and later succumbed to a single gunshot wound to the back at the University of Maryland's Shock
Trauma Center. Four other individuals were also wounded in the mass shooting.
The incident was described as a brazen attack, where a lone gunman approached the group of people standing outside the store and opened fire. The motive for the shooting was believed to be an act of retaliation. The Baltimore Police Department's investigation into the deadly assault led them to identify a suspect.
Less than two weeks later, on December 12, 2016, authorities apprehended Damon Dwight Alexander. He was taken into custody without incident while he was asleep on a couch at a family member's residence. The investigation revealed that Alexander was a member of the Black Guerrilla Family gang, and the firearm used in the commission of the crime had been reported stolen.
Damon Dwight Alexander faced a litany of charges for his role in the shooting, including first and second-degree murder for the deaths of Davon Dozier and Troy Smothers, as well as attempted murder charges for the four other victims who survived the attack. Following a trial, he was ultimately convicted of the first-degree murders of both Dozier and Smothers. His conviction brought a measure of justice to the families of the victims and resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for the man responsible for the deadly shooting.
