In the early hours of May 13, 2022, the body of Cartrel Baboolal, a 32-year-old Black male, was discovered inside a vacant dwelling in the 1800 block of Wilhelm Street in Baltimore, Maryland. An investigation revealed he had been shot and killed the previous day, on May 12, 2022. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The neighborhood, plagued by violence, was left shaken.
One resident of the Southwest Baltimore community remembered Baboolal as a 'nice guy' and expressed shock at his death. The area was known for its numerous vacant homes and frequent shootings, creating an environment of fear for those who lived there.
At the time of the discovery, Baltimore was experiencing a significant surge in violent crime and was on track to surpass 300 homicides for the year. City officials, including the mayor and city council, were actively discussing strategies to address the escalating crisis. Concerns were raised about the number of non-working CitiWatch cameras, the heavy caseloads of detectives, and the need for more resources to process evidence in a timely manner.
Despite the ongoing efforts of law enforcement, no suspects have been publicly identified and no arrests have been announced in connection with the murder of Cartrel Baboolal.
