In the spring of 2020, the life of 19-year-old Karleigh Breann Miller was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. On the evening of May 31st, she was discovered in a vehicle in the Park Hill neighborhood, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency services transported her to UofL Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the young woman's death led police to her boyfriend, Demond Haynes.
He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with her shooting. While Haynes maintained that the shooting was an accident, Karleigh's father later recalled early signs of trouble in their relationship, stating he knew something was wrong when his daughter told him Haynes had hit her.
Initially facing a murder charge, Demond Haynes later entered into a plea agreement. In January 2023, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree manslaughter, as well as possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and two counts of illegal possession of controlled substances. Following his guilty plea, Haynes was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The terms of his sentence stipulated that he is not eligible for parole or shock probation.
