In the late afternoon of a September day in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 18-year-old Mario 'Peanut' Marks Jr. was cut tragically short. On September 1, 2021, gunshots rang out in the Newburg neighborhood, and when police responded to the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Poplar Level Road around 4:30 p.m., they discovered Marks inside a car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. According to a witness who was present at the scene, 21-year-old Derrick Stover allegedly fired several shots from the backseat of the vehicle before fleeing. Surveillance footage from the area captured Stover running towards nearby Corinth Way. In an attempt to escape, Stover called for an Uber from his residence. However, a police helicopter had already spotted him in a yard on that street as he entered the car.
Following his apprehension, the details of Stover's attempt to conceal his involvement came to light. His grandmother, the owner of the residence he fled to, informed detectives that he had run into the back of her house and claimed to have been in a shootout. It was also reported that Stover had disposed of the clothes he was wearing and the handgun used in the shooting at the home.
Derrick Stover was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges in connection with the death of Mario Marks Jr. These charges included murder, tampering with physical evidence, and wanton endangerment, bringing a swift, though not final, development in the wake of the violent incident that ended a young man's life.
