On the afternoon of Thursday, May 17th, gunfire erupted in the Parkland neighborhood, claiming the lives of Bland and another young man, 24-year-old Tyson Mimms. The shooting, which also left two other men wounded, unfolded near the intersection of 32nd Street and West Kentucky Street.

In this subsequent incident, an argument between two women turned deadly. Witnesses reported that Cheetara Goldsmith, who was Bland's girlfriend, and Makeba Lee, the girlfriend of Tyson Mimms, exchanged heated words before Goldsmith allegedly shot Lee.
