In the early morning hours of November 5, 2021, the life of 32-year-old Jesse Jimenez was cut short in a burst of violence inside a West Main Street apartment in Lexington, Kentucky. Responding to initial reports of shots fired just before 3 a.m., police initially found nothing out of the ordinary. However, the situation escalated when a man arrived at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with a gunshot wound.
Information from this individual led officers back to the apartment building, where they made the grim discovery of Jimenez, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:24 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic scene that began with a physical altercation between another man and the eventual suspect, 40-year-old Robert Okorley. Following the fight, Okorley allegedly drew a handgun and attempted to shoot the man he had been fighting with. Instead, the bullet struck and killed Jesse Jimenez. The violence didn't end there. As another man fled the apartment and jumped into the bed of a pickup truck, Okorley reportedly fired at the departing vehicle, wounding the driver in the arm.
For seven months, the case remained under investigation until the arrest of Robert Okorley in June 2022. Investigators were aided by video footage that captured the entire incident and eyewitness testimony, which identified Okorley as the shooter. Okorley was subsequently charged with a string of felonies, including murder, attempted murder, second-degree assault, criminal mischief, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was taken into custody and held at the Fayette County Detention Center.
