In the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a grim discovery was made late on the evening of November 8, 2021. Inside a vehicle parked in the 200 block of Cecil Avenue, police found 21-year-old Robert Sanders, a Black male, who had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Alongside him in the car was 19-year-old Essance Duvall, who was critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The double homicide prompted an investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department. For several months, the case remained under investigation as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting of the two young victims. The motive behind the violent act was not immediately clear to investigators.
On January 21, 2022, a breakthrough in the case was announced with the arrest of 21-year-old Christopher Vonkeith Bachelor, Jr. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Robert Sanders and Essance Duvall. While an arrest was made, the circumstances that led to the shooting and the relationship between the suspect and the victims remained part of the ongoing investigation. The incident highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence within the city.
