A Congolese woman who sought refuge in the United States from the violence in her homeland became a victim of it in her new home. Nyota Bawili, a 39-year-old mother of seven, was fatally shot in her Louisville, Kentucky, residence on Sunday, January 9, 2022. She was approximately six months pregnant at the time of her death, and her unborn child also perished in the incident.
