A Congolese woman who sought refuge in the United States from the violence in her homeland became a victim of it in her new home. Nyota Bawili, a 39-year-old mother of seven, was fatally shot in her Louisville, Kentucky, residence on Sunday, January 9, 2022. She was approximately six months pregnant at the time of her death, and her unborn child also perished in the incident.
In the early morning hours, at around 2 a.m., while sitting in her living room with her husband, gunfire erupted
from outside their home. A bullet struck Bawili in the head, and she died at the scene. Her husband and their 13-month-old child, who were also in the room, were unharmed. The family, who had only resided in Louisville for about six months after moving from Florida, expressed that they had no known conflicts and did not believe she was the intended target of the shooting.
The death of Nyota Bawili sent shockwaves through Louisville's Congolese community, who mourned the loss of a woman who had come to America seeking peace. Having escaped the violence of the Democratic Republic of Congo nearly six years prior, her death in such a violent manner was a tragic irony that deeply affected those who knew her story.
