In February of 2011, a tragedy unfolded in Louisville, Kentucky, culminating in the death of six-month-old Ariah Phillips. The infant girl was rushed to Kosair Hospital with multiple injuries, including severe brain injuries and head trauma, from which she would not recover. The subsequent police investigation into her death would span two years, treating the case as a homicide from the outset.
Investigators immediately focused on the child's mother, Whitney Phillips, and her boyfriend,
James McElroy, as persons of interest. The couple had brought Ariah to the hospital, but the nature of her injuries suggested a brutal beating had occurred within their home on Vermont Avenue. The investigation was complex, requiring extensive reviews of medical reports and autopsies to rule out other potential causes for the infant's injuries. The case remained active, with detectives diligently working to build a case against the two primary suspects.
In the course of the initial investigation at their home, authorities discovered large quantities of crack cocaine and drug scales, leading to immediate drug trafficking charges against Phillips and McElroy. During this time, other children in the home were placed under the care of Child Protective Services, indicating prior concerns about the children's welfare, as the agency had previous involvement with the family.
Finally, in July of 2013, the extensive investigation yielded enough evidence for charges to be brought in Ariah's death. A grand jury indicted Whitney Phillips and James McElroy, and they were arrested and charged with the murder of the infant. Phillips faced an additional charge of complicity to commit murder, while McElroy was charged with murder. The indictment accused Phillips of a pattern of abuse against her daughter over the course of the baby's short life.
