In a tragic turn of events stemming from a heated argument, David Harris, a 38-year-old man, was shot and killed on March 30, 2022. The incident unfolded in Pike County, Kentucky, where an altercation between David and his father, Larry Harris, escalated with fatal consequences.
According to police reports, both men had been drinking prior to the dispute.
In a subsequent call to 911, Larry Harris admitted to shooting his son, telling the dispatcher that he was tired of being “beat and cussed at.” He also reportedly declined to provide first aid to his son following the shooting. An investigation by the Kentucky State Police revealed that David Harris had been shot six times.
Following the incident, Larry Harris, who was 61 years old at the time, was arrested and subsequently indicted by a grand jury on a charge of murder. He was held in the Pike County Detention Center from the day of his arrest.
Ultimately, the case did not go to a full trial. Larry Harris reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. Despite his claim of self-defense, court records indicated that he shot his son multiple times, including after David had turned and attempted to flee. Consequently, Larry Harris was formally sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of his son.
