In the quiet community of Smith Mills, Kentucky, a tragic event unfolded on September 3, 2022, claiming the life of 26-year-old Arianna Lynn Ziebell. A loving mother of two young boys, Arianna was known for her vibrant personality, enjoying singing, gardening, cooking, and her skill with makeup. Her life was cut short in a violent act that also took the life of another individual and ended with the death of the perpetrator.
On that Saturday evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., law
enforcement responded to a call regarding a shooting at a residence on State Road 136-West. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene outside the home. Arianna Ziebell was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Another victim, 42-year-old Joshua L. Mallory, was also found outside with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The situation was further complicated by the presence of four children inside the residence. Responding officers, upon learning of the children, activated an emergency response team. In a tense but ultimately successful operation, troopers and Henderson County deputies were able to safely evacuate all four children from the home in under an hour. Once the children were secure, authorities made entry into the house where they found 27-year-old Mason Quinn deceased from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigations by the Kentucky State Police concluded that the incident was a double-murder-suicide, with Mason Quinn identified as the suspect in the deaths of Arianna Ziebell and Joshua Mallory. The motive for the tragic events has not been publicly detailed. The community was left to mourn the loss of two of its members, with friends and family remembering Arianna for the joy she brought to their lives and as a devoted mother to her two sons.
