In the early morning hours of November 20, 2022, a dispute over car keys in Louisville's Phoenix Hill neighborhood escalated into a fatal encounter for 21-year-old DeAnthony Robinson. The incident, which unfolded around 6:30 a.m. in the 500 block of South Shelby Street, began with an argument between Montez Anthony and Robinson's girlfriend. Anthony was seeking the return of a friend's car keys that the girlfriend possessed.
The confrontation intensified when Anthony drove to Robinson's
apartment. As Robinson's girlfriend exited a vehicle, Anthony allegedly brandished a gun, preventing her from entering the apartment and demanding the keys while holding the weapon to her head. In response, she threw the keys into the street. The commotion drew DeAnthony Robinson, who was also armed, outside of his residence.
Upon seeing Anthony chasing his girlfriend, Robinson reportedly fired his handgun. Anthony returned fire, striking Robinson. As Anthony retreated to his car, he continued to shoot, with several bullets hitting Robinson's apartment building. Tragically, one of these rounds penetrated the living room where three other people, including two infants, were present. DeAnthony Robinson succumbed to his injuries. Anthony was also injured in the exchange and was driven to the hospital by his girlfriend. Much of the tragic incident was captured on surveillance video, and authorities were able to recover Anthony's firearm.
Following treatment for his injuries, Montez Anthony, also 21, was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with the murder of DeAnthony Robinson and appeared in Jefferson District Court on November 30, 2022, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf and his bond was set at $750,000. Known to friends and family as 'DeDe,' DeAnthony was a Louisville native who had attended Doss High School. He was the proud father of a four-month-old daughter, Ava'Lynn Nicole Robinson.
