In the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, a 15-year-old male named Ja'Maury Johnson was living a life filled with the passions of a typical teenager. He was a 10th-grade student at Minor Daniels School who found joy in drawing, art, and music, particularly rap. Known for his bright and artistic nature, Ja'Maury was a cherished member of his family and was admired by his peers.
He was a member of Mount Sinai AOH Church and his family remembers him as a smart and gifted young man who was deeply loved.
The world for Ja'Maury's family was irrevocably shattered on a cold Sunday in December. On December 18, 2022, Ja'Maury was found in Chickasaw Park, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Louisville Metro Police responded to a call about a person down in the park just after 4 p.m. and discovered the teenager's body. The Jefferson County Coroner's office later identified him, and what was initially a death investigation was soon classified as a homicide. According to his grieving mother, Kelaiah Perry, her son’s body may have been in the park for as long as eight hours before being found. She painfully learned of her son's death through social media posts from his friends.
In the months that followed, Ja'Maury's family has been left grappling with the unanswered questions surrounding his death. The investigation into his murder remains open, but no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. His mother has publicly pleaded for anyone with information to come forward and has advocated for the installation of cameras in Chickasaw Park in the hopes of preventing similar tragedies. She believes that other young people were involved in her son's death and continues to fight for justice for her beloved son.
