Corporal Timothy Joseph Bowe, aged 36, was a dedicated member of the Minnesota State Patrol. On June 7, 1997, he was tragically killed while assisting county deputies in responding to a shooting call in Cambridge, Minnesota. Corporal Bowe and three deputies parked their cruisers and walked approximately three-quarters of a mile to a secluded house. Upon arrival, they spotted a car with the suspect lying across the front seats, his feet hanging out of the vehicle.
As they approached, the suspect sat up and began firing, striking Corporal Bowe in the chin from about 35 yards away. Corporal Bowe succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later, around 2 am.
The suspect, whose name was not disclosed in the sources, was found to have taken his own life after the deputies returned fire. An autopsy confirmed that the suspect died by suicide. Corporal Bowe had served with the Minnesota State Patrol for 15 years and was survived by his wife, a six-year-old daughter, and a nine-month-old son.
No arrests were made in connection with the incident, as the suspect had already died at the scene. The tragic loss of Corporal Bowe is remembered by his colleagues and the community he served.
