Jahmari Rice, a 15-year-old Black / African American male, had only been a student at the South Education Center in Richfield, a suburb of Minneapolis, for a week when his life was cut short. On February 1, 2022, a dispute that began inside the school spilled out into the parking lot around lunchtime. What started as an argument between a group of students quickly escalated into a tragedy that would leave a community in mourning.
According to witness accounts and court proceedings,
Jahmari and two other students were involved in a confrontation with two other students, 18-year-old Fernando Valdez-Alvarez and 19-year-old Alfredo Rosario Solis. The altercation turned violent when one of the students with Jahmari punched Solis. In response, Valdez-Alvarez retrieved a handgun from a vehicle and opened fire on Jahmari and the other students. Jahmari was struck in the chest. He was found lying on the sidewalk outside the school and was rushed to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was pronounced dead. Two other students were also injured in the shooting but ultimately survived.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Valdez-Alvarez and Solis fled the scene in an SUV. Their freedom was short-lived, however, as law enforcement located and arrested both individuals at separate residences in Minneapolis later that same day. A handgun was also recovered during the execution of a search warrant. The investigation led to significant charges being filed against both suspects, setting the stage for a lengthy legal process.
Fernando Valdez-Alvarez eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder and first-degree assault. He admitted to being the one who fired the weapon that killed Jahmari Rice and wounded another student. In March 2023, he was sentenced to over 23 years in prison. The second suspect, Alfredo Rosario Solis, faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder. However, a jury acquitted him of the murder charges, finding him guilty only of assault. He was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the incident. The outcome of the legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to some, but for Jahmari's family, the loss remained a profound and enduring pain.
