On November 24, 2023, 60-year-old Donald Edmondson was fatally shot in his north Minneapolis apartment. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Gateway Lofts on West Broadway Avenue around 3 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Edmondson with a gunshot wound to the chest; despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Edmondson's death was a homicide caused by the gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Edmondson had an ongoing dispute with his neighbor, 59-year-old Walter Hill. Surveillance footage showed Hill approaching Edmondson's apartment and pointing a gun at the door. Witnesses corroborated that Hill shot Edmondson during an altercation.
Hill was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with second-degree unpremeditated murder. In October 2024, he pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with credit for time served. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty stated, 'Mr. Edmondson should still be alive,' emphasizing the senselessness of the act and expressing hope that the sentence would bring some measure of peace to Edmondson's loved ones.
