On September 18, 2022, Birahim Bilugeo Gildersleve, a 28-year-old resident of Rochester, MN, was fatally shot in the Loring Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. The incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. on the 1600 block of Harmon Place. Minneapolis police responded to the scene and found Gildersleve suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and right leg.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from an argument that escalated outside an unlicensed after-hours party. Surveillance footage and fingerprint analysis led investigators to identify 27-year-old Mayan Deng Mayan as the shooter. Mayan was seen on video firing a gun at Gildersleve before fleeing the scene in a vehicle that was later found in Apple Valley.
Mayan Deng Mayan was initially charged with second-degree murder in February 2023. A Hennepin County Grand Jury later indicted him on first-degree premeditated murder charges in August 2023. However, in a plea agreement reached in September 2023, Mayan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for the dismissal of the first-degree murder charge. On October 28, 2024, he was sentenced to 34.5 years in prison, with credit for 585 days already served.
