Gregory Doyle Sweeten, 35, a Black male from Minneapolis, was killed in a midday burst of rifle fire on August 26, 2025, on the sidewalk near East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue, across from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in the Phillips neighborhood. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, he died at the scene of a rifle wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The shooting unfolded around 1:30 p.m., sending bystanders scrambling as multiple victims fell; six others were wounded but survived. Neighbors recalled the chaos as first responders converged on the block, which was soon cordoned off by police.
Investigators say the gunman arrived in a gray Honda Civic, stepped out wearing a mask, and fired nearly 30 rounds in roughly eight seconds before fleeing, a barrage that police said appeared to target at least one person in the group. The site of the attack—just off Lake Street—was already under strain from recent violent crime, and the shooting became the first in a series of mass-casualty incidents that shook south Minneapolis in late August and September. In the days that followed, mourners left letters and graffiti tributes at the chain-link fence along the block, invoking Sweeten by the nickname “Levi.”
Within a week, prosecutors charged two alleged accomplices, Ryan Timothy Quinn, 33, and Tiffany Lynn Marie Martindale, 30, with aiding an offender to avoid arrest. Charging documents describe Quinn driving the Civic while Martindale and the gunman—identified in calls she made as “Bino”—circled the block; the shooter then got out, opened fire into the crowd, and was later dropped off in north Minneapolis. Dashcam and surveillance video, along with registration records for the Civic, tied the car to the scene.
On September 24, Minneapolis police announced the arrest of 24-year-old Trayveion Alvin Green as the suspected gunman. He was charged in the August 26 attack, with the Star Tribune reporting seven counts of second-degree murder in connection with the death and the wounding of the other victims. Court records cited by reporters say investigators linked the nickname “Bino” to Green through subscriber information for the phone number contacted by Martindale around the time of the shooting. As of those announcements, authorities had not publicly named any other shooters; the case against the alleged accomplices and the accused gunman moved forward in Hennepin County.
