In the late morning of March 4, 2015, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm near 61st Street and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas, forever altering the course of many lives. Responding to reports of the shooting, police discovered a vehicle stopped at the intersection of 63rd Street and Parallel Parkway. Inside, they found 32-year-old Anthony M. Bush Jr., a Black / African American male from Missouri, deceased in the passenger seat from gunshot wounds.
The driver of the car was present but had miraculously escaped physical injury.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly. The day after the shooting, Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Terry Zeigler announced that two suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The swift arrests brought a sense of progress to a community shaken by the violent act that had claimed the life of Anthony Bush.
The two individuals arrested were later identified as Lakorri Terry and Demarkus Campbell-Donnell. Both men faced charges for their involvement in Bush's death. Terry ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December 2015. In January 2016, the 20-year-old was sentenced to nine years and nine months in prison for his role in the killing. His accomplice, 23-year-old Demarkus Campbell-Donnell, also faced justice and was found guilty of second-degree murder by a jury.
