In the late hours of a February evening in Kansas City, Kansas, a young Hispanic/Latino man's life was tragically cut short. Twenty-two-year-old Erick Reynaldo Rangel-Mendoza was sitting in his parked car in the parking lot of a Family Dollar located in the 1200 block of Central Avenue on February 21, 2020. In a sudden burst of violence, at least a dozen shots were fired from the direction of Central Avenue directly at his vehicle.
First responders arrived at the scene to find
Rangel-Mendoza suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he immediately underwent surgery in an effort to save his life. Despite the medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department officially identified him as the victim a week after the shooting took place. His death marked the fifth homicide in the city for that year.
