Joseph Allen Sweet, a 48-year-old Caucasian male, passed away on March 6, 2015, in Norton, Kansas. Known to his friends and family as "Tink," he was born on September 14, 1967, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Growing up in a military family, he lived in various locations before settling in El Cajon, California, where he graduated from high school. He also served in the U.S. Navy.
A machinist by trade, he was a husband, father, and grandfather who had a passion for hunting, fishing, and working on vehicles and motorcycles.
The circumstances of his death were tragic. On that Friday in March, Joseph Sweet's body was discovered in a park in Norton. The investigation into his death quickly identified a primary suspect, 37-year-old Bobby Tallent. The events that unfolded involved a wider crime spree. In addition to being a suspect in Sweet's death, Tallent was accused of shooting at law enforcement officers in the park and during a subsequent chase near Norton. He was also accused of stealing a vehicle and leading officers on a pursuit before he was finally apprehended near the Nebraska border.
The legal proceedings against Bobby Tallent faced some initial complications. A mistrial was declared due to media coverage that was deemed to have potentially influenced the jury pool. This led to a change of venue for the trial to ensure fairness. In March 2017, Tallent pleaded guilty to several charges, including one count of intentional second-degree murder for the death of Joseph Sweet. His other convictions included two counts of intentional attempted second-degree murder for firing at police officers, burglary, felony theft, and felony flee and elude a law enforcement officer. In May 2017, Bobby Joe Tallent was sentenced to more than 28 years in prison for his crimes.
