In the pre-dawn hours of July 25, 2022, a single gunshot echoed through a Chanute, Kansas neighborhood, forever altering the course of many lives. Responding to a 911 call from a concerned citizen, police discovered the body of Blake A. Pearson, a 34-year-old male from Topeka, in an alley east of 1706 S. Highland. A bystander was administering CPR when officers arrived, a desperate attempt to fend off the inevitable.
Emergency responders rushed Pearson to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead, and what began as a medical emergency swiftly turned into a homicide investigation led by the Chanute Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Investigators assured the public that they did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect. On August 1, 2022, authorities arrested 41-year-old Nicole Fox of Topeka in connection with Pearson's death. She was taken into custody in Allen County on suspicion of first-degree murder. Fox was also arrested for charges stemming from a separate, unrelated incident that had occurred in Chanute earlier in July. She was booked into the Neosho County Jail, and the case was handed over to the Neosho County Attorney for prosecution.
