In the early morning hours of September 26, 2020, a fatal encounter unfolded in Topeka, Kansas, leaving 35-year-old Matthew Pressler, a White/Caucasian male, dead from gunshot wounds. The incident occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m. in the 300 block of Southwest Roosevelt Street, where Topeka police officers were dispatched following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Pressler suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his wounds at the scene.
The investigation into Pressler's death quickly revealed a violent exchange of gunfire. Authorities identified 37-year-old Jason Michael Thomas as the other individual involved in the shootout. According to the Shawnee County District Attorney, Thomas had allegedly made prior threats to shoot at the residence where Pressler was ultimately found. On the night of the incident, Thomas reportedly arrived at the location in a vehicle, leading to a confrontation with Pressler. This confrontation escalated into both men firing weapons, resulting in Pressler's death.
Following the shooting, a search for Thomas ensued. He was located and arrested the following Monday by Jackson County Sheriff's deputies after being observed leaving a residence in Delia. Thomas was subsequently charged with a litany of felonies, including first-degree murder, intentional second-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, aggravated assault, making a criminal threat, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was booked into the Shawnee County Jail, with his bond set at $1 million.
