In the early hours of February 1, 2024, the life of 33-year-old Hispanic male, Gabriel Andres Martinez-Meraz, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of S.E. 12th Street, Topeka police officers discovered Martinez-Meraz with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene in what would become the city's first homicide of the year.
