In the early hours of February 1, 2024, the life of 33-year-old Hispanic male, Gabriel Andres Martinez-Meraz, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of S.E. 12th Street, Topeka police officers discovered Martinez-Meraz with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene in what would become the city's first homicide of the year.
Born in Topeka on April 16, 1990, Martinez-Meraz was a skilled
mechanic with a passion for rebuilding and working on cars. When not immersed in his work, he enjoyed playing video games with his friends and three sisters. A sports enthusiast, he grew up playing soccer with his father and family. He is survived by his parents, his daughter, and three sisters, along with a large extended family.
The investigation into the death of Gabriel Andres Martinez-Meraz led to the arrest of two individuals. TyRon E'lon Wagner, 33, was taken into custody and faced serious charges including first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, possession of stolen property, and criminal possession of a firearm.
A second suspect, 29-year-old Shi Ann Veloris Barnes, was also arrested in connection with the case. Barnes was charged with obstructing apprehension or prosecution and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
