In the late spring of 2017, a tragedy befell a Hispanic/Latino male teenager from Topeka, Kansas. Angel Quinones, age 16, was fatally shot on the evening of May 31, 2017. The incident occurred in the central part of the city, in the 700 block of SW 16th Street. Following the shooting, he was transported by a private vehicle to Stormont Vail Hospital, suffering from what would prove to be a mortal wound.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on June 1, 2017.
Initially, the Topeka Police Department characterized the shooting as accidental. However, this conclusion was met with immediate skepticism and heartache from Angel's family and friends. They publicly contested the official narrative, insisting that the circumstances surrounding his death were not consistent with an accident. His uncle, Marcus Payton, revealed that while Angel had recently left school, he had plans to return. Family members, including his cousins, could not believe the shooting was self-inflicted or accidental, emphasizing his responsibilities and love for his many siblings. They passionately appealed for a more in-depth investigation into the true cause of his death.
