Lonnie V. Mitchell, a 21-year-old Black man, was found shot to death on the afternoon of Monday, June 22, 2015. His body was discovered in the street in the 1900 block of North Third Street in Kansas City, Kansas, after police responded to reports of gunfire in the area at approximately 2:10 p.m. Both Mitchell and the individual later accused in his death were residents of Kansas City, Kansas.
In the days following the discovery of Mitchell's body, the investigation led authorities to a
suspect. A 16-year-old male, Lloyd Vincent IV, was identified and charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. At the time the charges were announced, Vincent remained at large, and the Wyandotte County District Attorney's office issued a public statement cautioning that he might be armed and dangerous. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department continued their investigation, seeking information from the public to aid in his apprehension.
By April of the following year, the suspect, then 17, had been apprehended and was bound over for trial as an adult.
