On the night of July 11, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Kansas City, Kansas intersection, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Mark A. Payne, a 26-year-old Black / African American male, was shot multiple times near 10th Street and Kimball Avenue at approximately 10:45 p.m. The fatal shooting marked the 82nd homicide in the metropolitan area that year.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement began their investigation into Payne's death.
Their efforts quickly led to a breakthrough. The morning after the incident, a suspect was taken into custody. The individual arrested was identified as 53-year-old Tyrone M. Wesson Sr., a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.
Following his arrest, Wesson was booked into the Wyandotte County jail. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Mark Payne. A judge set his bond at $500,000. While an arrest and charges were made, authorities did not publicly release a motive for the killing. Payne was remembered by his family as a person with a huge personality who loved telling jokes and drawing.
