In the late hours of Sunday, September 4, 2016, a White male named David Burkin, aged 39, was found shot inside a vehicle in Kansas City, Kansas. Police responded to what was initially reported as an accident shortly before midnight in the 900 block of Argentine Boulevard. Upon arrival, they discovered Burkin suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The investigation into Burkin's death quickly led to a suspect.
Authorities determined that the shooting occurred in front of Zavala Tire Service located at 954 Argentine Boulevard. The owner of the tire shop, Celestino Zavala-Ruiz, was subsequently arrested in connection with the homicide. One report indicated that Burkin was found inside a stolen vehicle.
Following the investigation, the Wyandotte County District Attorney's office charged Celestino Zavala-Ruiz with second-degree murder in the death of David Burkin. Zavala-Ruiz was held at the Wyandotte County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond. Police officials acknowledged that tips from the community were instrumental in leading to the arrest in this case.
