In a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Prairie Village, Kansas, the life of 53-year-old Caucasian female Barbara L. Glenn came to a tragic end on September 20, 2016. On that Tuesday, police were called to a home in the 6000 block of West 78th Terrace, where they discovered a grim scene. Inside, Barbara and her 48-year-old husband, Richard C. Glenn, were found, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Investigators quickly determined that the incident was a murder-suicide.
Prairie Village police identified Richard Glenn as the suspect, concluding that he had shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself. The couple had two adult daughters who, in the aftermath of the tragedy, described their parents as loving and caring people who had recently fallen on tough times.
This violent end was foreshadowed by a history of domestic turmoil. Court records revealed a pattern of abuse by Richard Glenn against his wife. In May 2006, he was charged with aggravated assault with a handgun and battery against Barbara. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and domestic battery and was sentenced to two years of probation. Trouble surfaced again in November 2011 when he was charged with domestic battery against Barbara, leading to a year of probation. During this period, a no-contact order was issued, which Barbara later requested to be lifted, a common occurrence in situations of domestic abuse.
