On July 6, 2015, an unknown assailant armed with a rifle fired multiple rounds into her home located at 61st and Robinson. Harris was struck by the gunfire and later succumbed to her injuries. Her 11-year-old daughter, who was also inside the residence, was wounded in the attack but survived.
The investigation into Harris's death revealed a
chilling connection to another recent act of violence in the same neighborhood. Just six days prior, on June 30, 2015, two young men, 18-year-old Velik L. Henderson and 19-year-old Trevon D. Anderson, were shot and killed on the same block. Authorities have stated that they believe the two incidents are related, suggesting a possible link between the homicides. This revelation cast a shadow of fear over the community and intensified the search for those responsible.
In the days following the shootings, law enforcement identified and arrested an 18-year-old man, Donnell Cortez Preston, charging him with murder in connection with the deaths of Henderson and Anderson. Another person of interest, Marquise D. Stokes, also 18, was located and interviewed by detectives regarding the double homicide.
