Do you know who murdered Star? On a Tuesday afternoon in February 1999, Star Gail Boomer, a 39-year-old Caucasian female, went to Uncle Mike's Bar near her home in Kansas City, Kansas, and was never seen again. She had gone to the local establishment with her roommate, who left early but planned to pick Star up later. When the roommate called the bar, she was told that Star had left with two men.
However, witness accounts from that evening painted a much more violent and disturbing picture of what transpired.
According to more than a dozen witnesses who were at the bar, Star was involved in a violent altercation with a man. The confrontation escalated, and the man allegedly knocked her to the ground, causing her to lose consciousness. Witnesses reported that she did not leave voluntarily but was instead dragged out of the bar by two men and put into a vehicle. Her roommate reported her missing five days later, on February 28, 1999. Investigators believe she may have been killed inside the bar and her body taken to another location.
Several months later, in October 1999, authorities arrested and charged two men, William Eugene “Geno” Spradlin and Robert Franklin “Butch” Horn, with second-degree murder in connection with Star's disappearance. Both men had extensive criminal histories. However, the case against them crumbled when the numerous witnesses to the events at the bar refused to testify in court, leading to the charges being dismissed. Another patron in the bar that night, Shon Pernice, was also connected to the case as a witness. Pernice, a former medic who said he rendered aid to Star after she was initially assaulted, was later convicted of killing his own wife a decade later, though he has not been named a suspect in Star's case.
The investigation into Star Boomer's disappearance went cold for many years but was officially reopened in 2017. In late 2019, police, acting on a tip, used ground-penetrating radar to search the empty lot where the house she once shared with a boyfriend had stood. Although the radar detected some anomalies beneath the surface, an excavation of the site yielded no conclusive evidence. The case remains unsolved, and Star Boomer, who was a mother to a young son at the time she vanished, is presumed dead.
