On a spring evening in Wichita, Kansas, 31-year-old James Walker III, a Black/African American male, was at a house party, enjoying a get-together with a number of other adults and children. The date was April 9, 2017, and the gathering was taking place in the 1200 block of South Minneapolis. As some of the partygoers socialized in the front yard, the festive atmosphere was shattered by an act of sudden and brutal violence.
Without warning, three or four men approached the residence on
foot and opened fire, their target being James Walker. He was struck by multiple gunshots. In the chaos that ensued, a 28-year-old woman also sustained a leg injury, although she was not shot. Emergency services were called to the scene just after 9 p.m., and Walker was rushed to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following morning.
The Wichita Police Department launched a homicide investigation, with Detective Addie Perkins leading the inquiry. However, the case quickly proved to be a challenging one. Despite the fact that there were numerous witnesses to the shooting, investigators were met with a wall of silence. Many of the party attendees were reluctant to come forward with information that could lead to the identification of the assailants. This lack of cooperation, combined with a scarcity of physical evidence, meant that the investigation soon hit a dead end.
To this day, the murder of James Walker III remains unsolved. No arrests have ever been made, and the identities of the men who took his life are still unknown. The motive behind the shooting also remains unclear. The case is now considered a cold case, a painful and unresolved chapter for the family and friends of the young man who was known to many as a talented local rapper. The Wichita Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any information that might bring a resolution to this tragic and unsolved crime.
