On a Sunday in late April of 2017, the city of Topeka, Kansas, was rocked by a tragic event that claimed the lives of three men. Among the victims was Jesus Galvez, a 64-year-old male of Filipino descent, who was working at a residence that served as a home for individuals with special needs. He and his 20-year-old son, Soren Galvez, were at the location carrying out maintenance tasks when the violence erupted.
The peaceful day was shattered when Joshua Gueary, 25, opened fire, fatally
wounding Jesus, his son Soren, and his own 29-year-old brother, Larry Gueary. Another individual was also injured during the attack but was expected to survive the ordeal. The shooting took place at a home that was part of a business providing care for developmentally disabled adults, a place where the Galvez family was known for their willingness to help.
In the aftermath of the horrific events, law enforcement identified Joshua Gueary as the sole perpetrator of the killings. After carrying out the deadly assault on his brother and the two members of the Galvez family, Gueary then took his own life. With the suspect deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the incident, leaving a community to mourn and a family to grapple with an immeasurable loss. The motive behind the tragic murder-suicide was not made clear by authorities.
