On a summer evening in Topeka, Kansas, the life of 26-year-old Ryan Lofton, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 7, 2010, a dispute at his residence escalated into violence, ending with Lofton being fatally shot. The man identified as the shooter was Stephen Alan Macomber. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Lofton was heard shouting, "I'm shot," before succumbing to a gunshot wound to his back.
The events that unfolded after the shooting were a
chaotic and desperate attempt by Macomber to evade capture. He fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a chase that extended beyond the confines of Shawnee County. During his flight, the violence continued as he shot and wounded a Marshall County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop in Blue Rapids. The escalating situation culminated in a tense standoff with police, during which Macomber took an elderly woman hostage before he was finally apprehended. An autopsy later confirmed that Lofton's death was the result of the single gunshot wound, with no indication that it was fired at close range.
In the years that followed, the pursuit of justice for Ryan Lofton's death moved through the court system. In 2012, Stephen Alan Macomber was convicted of second-degree murder. However, this was not the final chapter in the legal saga. The Kansas Court of Appeals later ordered a retrial. In 2015, the legal proceedings concluded with Macomber being sentenced to just over 11 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in connection with Lofton's death. This sentence was to be served consecutively to an approximately 80-year sentence he was already serving for the other crimes committed during his flight, including the shooting of the deputy and the hostage situation. Macomber's criminal history, which included prior convictions, contributed to a cumulative prison sentence of over 90 years.
