In the early hours of March 17, 2018, the life of 35-year-old Michael Williams Jr., a Black / African American man, was tragically cut short inside the Firelight Lounge in Kansas City, Kansas. A father of eleven children, Williams was a regular at the club and was enjoying a night out with friends. What began as a typical weekend evening shattered in an instant, leaving a family and community to grapple with a senseless act of violence.
Williams was remembered by his family as a loving son, brother, and most importantly, a devoted father who was an active presence in all of his children's lives.
The events that led to Williams' death began with a personal dispute that he had no part in. A woman, later identified as Tyjuana Watson, entered the nightclub and got into an altercation. During the confrontation, Watson produced a handgun. According to the club's owner, she pushed past security and fired a single shot. That bullet struck Michael Williams Jr., who was an innocent bystander in the chaotic scene. By the time police arrived at the lounge, located in the 1800 block of Parallel Parkway, Williams had succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the shooting, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department identified 46-year-old Tyjuana Watson as the primary suspect. Another woman, Lacresha Carr, was also initially sought for allegedly fleeing the scene with Watson, but she later turned herself in and was released pending further investigation. As law enforcement searched for Watson, Williams' family held a vigil outside the Firelight Lounge, pleading for justice for their loved one. The community rallied around the grieving family, offering support and contributing to a fundraiser for his funeral expenses and the care of his children.
After a public appeal for information on her whereabouts, Tyjuana Watson, who also used several aliases including Tyjuana Jackson, turned herself in to the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department. She was subsequently charged in connection with the death of Michael Williams Jr. Her case went to trial, where she was convicted by a jury of voluntary manslaughter. An appeal of her conviction was later denied, and the court affirmed her conviction and sentence, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic and untimely death of an innocent father of eleven.
