In the early morning hours of May 20, 2018, Mohamed Mohamud, a 28-year-old Black/African American male, was found shot to death inside a car in Kansas City, KS. The discovery was made in the parking lot of the Gateway Plaza Townhomes, located in the 1500 block of North Fifth Street. Police responded to a call and upon arrival, found Mohamud suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite any efforts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into the shooting death of Mohamed Mohamud did not immediately lead to any suspects, and police appealed to the public for any information that could help move the case forward. The area around the vehicle where Mohamud was found was marked with about a dozen evidence markers, indicating the number of bullet casings recovered from the scene. The tragic event left family and friends mourning the loss of a young man in a violent crime that initially seemed to be without witnesses or leads.
Several months after the fatal shooting, in August 2018, a breakthrough in the investigation led to the arrests of two individuals. Wyandotte County prosecutors announced that 24-year-old Kalen Mock and 28-year-old Tyshedra Mitchell had both been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Mohamed Mohamud. Following their arrests, Mock was held on a $500,000 bond, while Mitchell's bond was set at $200,000. Both were booked into the Wyandotte County Detention Center to await further legal proceedings.
