A 21-year-old Hispanic male named Zachary Chavez died on December 20, 2018, after being shot in Goodland, Kansas. The incident occurred at a residence at 5490 County Road 23. The Sherman County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about the shooting at approximately 12:30 a.m. When deputies arrived, they found Chavez with a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported him to Goodland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2 a.m.
Chavez, who was from
Tribune, Kansas, was passionate about mixed martial arts and had been planning to compete in his first title fight in 2019. He also enjoyed playing the electric guitar, woodworking, and was in the process of restoring his 1967 Corvair. He had attended both Wichita and Greeley County High Schools.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a friend of Chavez, Jesus M. Soto, who was 21 years old and from Goodland. At the time of the investigation, Soto was already being held in the Sherman County Jail on a warrant for an unrelated matter. An arrest warrant was issued and served to Soto for involuntary manslaughter in connection with Chavez's death. He also faced charges for attempted criminal damage to property and a probation violation. The case was expected to be prosecuted by the Sherman County Attorney.
