On the night of July 3, 2023, in Wichita, Kansas, a sequence of events tragically culminated in the death of 16-year-old Elrecus Nolan, a Black male. Just before 10:30 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the air near the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Ellis Street. A witness reported seeing a silver 2002 Ford Taurus rolling slowly westbound on Mt. Vernon before it hit a curb and came to a stop on the sidewalk.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered Nolan inside the vehicle, unconscious and not breathing, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite life-saving efforts by officers until emergency medical services arrived, Elrecus Nolan was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the car.
The investigation into the homicide led Wichita police to identify and arrest three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Three days after the incident, authorities arrested 21-year-old Dougqualynn Raymond Patterson and 21-year-old Kameron D. Solomon, both from Wichita. Five days after the crime, a third suspect, 24-year-old Rico Jermin Brown Jr. of Valley Center, was taken into custody at his home. All three men were initially held on suspicion of first-degree murder. Brown and Patterson were later formally charged with first-degree murder.
Further details emerged, suggesting a motive rooted in retaliation. According to an arrest affidavit, Patterson claimed that earlier on the day of the shooting, he had been robbed at gunpoint by Nolan and two other individuals, who took $800, a handgun, and a watch from him. Patterson then recounted the incident to his friends, including Brown, who allegedly became very upset and stated he would kill Nolan for him. The group then searched for Nolan and eventually found him at a gas station. They proceeded to follow Nolan's vehicle to a stoplight, where Brown allegedly leaned out of their car and fired approximately 10 shots at Nolan and his vehicle, leading to the fatal outcome. Authorities found $1,137 in cash in Nolan's pocket and a handgun in the center console of his car.
The legal process moved forward, leading to a conviction for one of the suspects. In July 2024, a jury found Rico Brown Jr. guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Elrecus Nolan. Subsequently, he was sentenced to life in prison and will not be eligible for parole for more than 51 years. Dougqualynn Raymond Patterson has also been charged with intentional and premeditated first-degree murder, and his case is proceeding through the court system.
