On a late summer day in Wichita, Kansas, the life of James Edward Gibson, a 69-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 30, 2023, police were dispatched to the Seneca Place Apartments located at 2116 South Seneca, where they discovered Gibson inside his residence with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, and the following day, authorities
arrested 31-year-old Kyle D. Carter in connection with the homicide. An investigation revealed that Carter and Gibson were known to each other and that the shooting was the culmination of a dispute over narcotics and money.
Carter was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, and possession of fentanyl. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail with his bond set at $500,000. The incident marked the 31st homicide in Wichita for the year 2023.
