In the early morning hours of September 2, 2021, 32-year-old Jason D. Huber was riding his three-wheeled bicycle near Central Riverside Park in Wichita, Kansas. His journey was tragically cut short when a man, who had been crouching by a wall of the Little Arkansas Bridge, stood up and opened fire. Huber was struck by multiple gunshots and left for dead on a sidewalk at the intersection of Murdock and Stackman. The assailant then stole his distinctive three-wheeled bike and fled the scene.
A passerby discovered Huber lying on the sidewalk around 2:15 a.m. and called 911. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, having suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and one to his buttock.
The initial investigation into Jason Huber's death saw Wichita Police take a man from Dodge City into custody, but he was soon released without any charges being filed. The focus of the investigation then shifted, leading to the arrest of Daniel Scott Carpenter. Carpenter was officially charged in connection with the murder. Police reports indicated that a vehicle, a white Buick La Sabre, was seen leaving a business at the same time as Huber and traveling in the same direction. This vehicle was linked to the suspect at the time.
However, in a significant turn of events, the case against Daniel S. Carpenter was dismissed without prejudice in August 2023. Investigators had identified a new suspect, Derek A. Zamzow, a 23-year-old from Valley Center. In May 2024, a jury found Zamzow guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison and will not be eligible for parole for 51 and a half years.
