Austin, a seventh-grader at Lansing Middle School, was known for his mischievous smile and his passion for soccer, a sport at which he was a gifted player. He had a deep love for animals, taking great pride in caring for his dog, Maggie, and a collection of turtles and other reptiles.
His kind and positive energy was a light to his family and friends.
The devastating discovery was made when family members became concerned after Austin and his older brother, 14-year-old Logan, failed to show up for a soccer game. Arriving at their father's home in rural Leavenworth, they found both boys deceased from gunshot wounds. The tragedy deepened with the realization that Austin's younger sisters, Nora, 7, and Aven, 3, were missing, prompting the issuance of an AMBER Alert that spanned multiple states. The search for the young girls and their father, Donald Ray Jackson Jr., came to an end hours later in Beckham County, Oklahoma. A truck driver spotted Jackson's vehicle, leading to his arrest and the safe recovery of the two girls.
In the wake of this harrowing event, Donald Ray Jackson Jr. was charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of his two sons. The Leavenworth County Attorney's office later announced its intention to seek the death penalty. During a court appearance in June 2023, a not guilty plea was entered on Jackson's behalf. More recent legal proceedings have focused on his mental competency to stand trial. As of mid-2025, Jackson was found incompetent to stand trial and was awaiting evaluation and treatment at a state hospital to determine if his competency can be restored, placing the legal case on hold.
