In the winter of 2021, the life of a young Black/African American man, James Edward Anderson III, was tragically cut short at the age of 19. On the evening of February 10, 2021, in Topeka, Kansas, Anderson was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. The Topeka Police Department was called to the scene to investigate the suspicious death. Despite the efforts of first responders, James succumbed to his injuries.
His passing sent ripples of grief through his family and the wider community.
James, born on February 16, 2001, was a recent graduate of Highland Park High School, having completed his studies in 2020. He was employed in the sanitation department of a large food manufacturing plant in Topeka. Known for his strong faith, he had been an active member of The New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church from a young age, serving as a Jr. Deacon and the Pastor's armor bearer. He was remembered for his passion for sports, movies, and music, and for the joy he brought to those around him, always ensuring everyone had a smile on their face. He resided with his great-grandparents who had adopted him.
The investigation into Anderson's death moved forward, and witnesses reported seeing a young man in his early twenties, dressed in dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt, fleeing the area shortly after the shooting. This description, coupled with a thorough investigation by the Topeka Police Department, led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. On February 15, 2021, just five days after James's death, 22-year-old Michael Thompson was taken into custody.
Thompson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Investigators believe the motive for the tragic incident stemmed from a personal dispute between Thompson and Anderson. The arrest brought a measure of relief to a community mourning the loss of a young life taken too soon, as the case proceeded toward trial.
