In the spring of Topeka, Kansas, the life of a beloved 55-year-old Black/African American man, Tyrone Troy Shepard, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of April 18, 2023, police responded to a call of a shooting in the 900 block of S.W. 17th Street. Upon arrival, they found Shepard suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them later that day.
Known to his loved ones as Troy, he was remembered as a man who cherished his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand to them and his friends.
The investigation into Shepard's death quickly moved forward, and within two days, an arrest was made. On April 20, 2023, 32-year-old Christopher F. Ray of Topeka was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. The community was still grappling with the senseless violence when another development in the case emerged.
Nearly a month later, on May 15, 2023, law enforcement announced a second arrest. Daniel Gallow, 24, was also implicated in Shepard's murder. Gallow was initially arrested for criminal possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. While in custody, authorities added the charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Tyrone Shepard, as well as a charge for criminal possession of a weapon by a felon. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the quest for justice for a man who had been a vibrant part of his community.
