On a summer day in Topeka, Kansas, the life of Richard Eloy Hernandez, a 47-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically cut short. On July 13, 2024, Hernandez, known to his friends and family as "Rico," was fatally shot in the city. The incident prompted an investigation by local law enforcement, leading to the arrest of two individuals. Following the initial arrests, one person was subsequently released.
The investigation progressed, and the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office brought
formal charges against a suspect. John Kynell, a 43-year-old man, was charged with murder in the first degree and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with Hernandez's death. A judge set Kynell's bond at one million dollars, and he was booked into the Shawnee County Jail.
Richard Hernandez was remembered as a man with a contagious smile and a personality that could light up a room. Proud of his multicultural background, which he described as both Native American and Mexican, he had a particular love for dancing to Mexican music. A talented and artistic individual, his skills were evident in his tattoos, murals, and various pictures cherished by those close to him. His employment history was varied, showcasing his talents in installation, building, and mechanical work. He is survived by his parents, four sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren.
