In the early morning hours of June 29, 2023, a shooting in Topeka, Kansas, claimed the life of 20-year-old Xavion Edward Phannix, a Black / African American male. The incident, which also left two other individuals with gunshot wounds, marked a grim milestone as the city's 19th homicide of the year, surpassing the total for the entire previous year.
Topeka police were dispatched to the 2600 block of S.E. Gilmore Court at approximately 12:14 a.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered three victims who had been shot. All three were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. One of the surviving victims sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening, while the other's were described as life-threatening. Tragically, Xavion Edward Phannix was pronounced dead by medical staff at the hospital.
In the wake of the shooting, the Topeka Police Department's detectives began reviewing all investigative leads. As of October 2023, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide, and authorities had not publicly released any details about potential suspects. The case remains an active investigation.
