In the early morning hours of June 29, 2023, a shooting in Topeka, Kansas, claimed the life of 20-year-old Xavion Edward Phannix, a Black / African American male. The incident, which also left two other individuals with gunshot wounds, marked a grim milestone as the city's 19th homicide of the year, surpassing the total for the entire previous year.
