On the evening of June 24, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas, the life of 43-year-old Steven Ray Warden, a Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. Just after 9:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting near Southwest 13th Street and Western Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered Warden suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The incident was quickly ruled a homicide, marking the eighth such case in Topeka for the year.
Investigators began piecing together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Their efforts led to a significant development just a few days later. On June 27, 2024, the Topeka Police Department arrested 18-year-old Dasanee D. Curry in connection with Warden's death.
Curry, a resident of Topeka, was taken into custody and is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. The individual faces several serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated child endangerment, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, and criminal damage to property. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public. Steven Ray Warden is survived by his wife and three children.
