In the early morning hours of the Fourth of July in 2015, a violent altercation at a Little Rock, Arkansas apartment complex left two young men dead. Kevin Marquis Brown, a 25-year-old male, and Terrence Slaughter, aged 26, both succumbed to gunshot wounds following the incident. The tragic events unfolded around 2:19 a.m. at the Briarwood Apartments located in the 800 block of South Rodney Parham Road.
Little Rock police were initially dispatched to the scene after a 911 call reported a
person down on the parking lot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Terrence Slaughter suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Baptist Hospital for surgery but ultimately did not survive his injuries. Shortly after the initial call, a second shooting victim, Kevin Marquis Brown, arrived at the same hospital by a personal vehicle. He too was treated for gunshot wounds but also died from his injuries.
According to a witness who had accompanied Brown to the apartment complex, the purpose of their visit was for Brown to meet with an individual who had contacted him by phone. The witness recounted that Brown and another man, later identified as Slaughter, engaged in a conversation that moved to their vehicle to discuss a bag of marijuana. The situation escalated when Slaughter allegedly demanded the entire contents of the bag. A struggle ensued, and gunshots were fired, striking both men.
The witness fled the scene during the shooting but returned to find Brown wounded and drove him to the hospital for medical attention. This same witness identified Terrence Slaughter as the individual who had shot Kevin Brown. At the scene of the crime, investigators recovered a semi-automatic handgun near Slaughter’s body, along with spent shell casings from two different firearms, indicating that more than one weapon was discharged. Police also found a bag of marijuana and a prescription bottle belonging to Brown.
The investigation into the double homicide suggested that the two men had shot each other during the confrontation. The vehicle that transported Brown to the hospital also had evidence of the shooting, with bullet holes and a shell casing found inside. While the police interviewed neighbors, no one had witnessed the actual shooting, though several reported hearing the gunshots and seeing a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene. The investigation, based on witness testimony and evidence collected, pointed to a fatal exchange of gunfire between Brown and Slaughter.
