In the late autumn of 2019, the life of a Caucasian male teenager from Topeka, Kansas, was tragically cut short. Fifteen-year-old Owen Hughes died on November 12, 2019, in a violent encounter that unfolded inside a home in the city. Remembered as a kind, generous, and loving person with a contagious laugh, Owen was known for his deep compassion for others and the immense value he placed on his family and friends.
To him, the closest of friends were considered family, and there was nothing he wouldn't do for them.
The circumstances of his death were grim. Police found Owen’s body inside a Topeka residence, the victim of a fatal shooting. Outside the same home, another man, 21-year-old Reginald McKenna Jr., was also found deceased. Investigators later determined that McKenna's death was a result of an act of self-defense by Owen Hughes during the incident. The events of that day pointed to a complex and violent altercation that left two individuals dead under starkly different legal conclusions.
In the year that followed Owen's death, his family awaited answers as the investigation into the homicide continued. The pursuit of justice led to the arrests of two men in connection with the killing. Larry Huggin III was taken into custody and charged with Owen's murder. Subsequently, a second suspect, 23-year-old Darnell Tyrie Peppers, was also arrested and faced multiple charges related to the teen's death, bringing a measure of progress in a case that had left a family and a community mourning the loss of a young life.
