On a cold February night in Gillingham, a 42-year-old Black / African American man named Tyrone A. Baggett was tragically killed. The events of February 16, 2018, would forever alter the lives of his family and reverberate through the community. That evening, a home invasion turned fatal, ending the life of a man remembered for his generosity and vibrant spirit.
The initial investigation by law enforcement led to the arrest of four individuals in connection with the homicide.
Among those taken into custody were Matthew H. H. Countryman IV, who was 18 at the time, and three teenagers: 18-year-old Joseph L. Superlone, 17-year-old Ashton L. Thomas, and 18-year-old JahLiyah M. Thomas. The group was also implicated in the robbery of a local Daylight Donuts that occurred shortly after the fatal shooting.
Subsequent legal proceedings brought the details of that night to light. Matthew H. H. Countryman IV faced a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Tyrone Baggett. The other three individuals, Joseph L. Superlone, Ashton L. Thomas, and JahLiyah M. Thomas, were also charged in connection with the crimes. The intertwining of the robbery and the homicide painted a grim picture of a night of violence that left a family grieving and a community in search of answers.
